Spanish men (old)

Clichés come to life ... and those that could never be catagorised.
Every evening, the local town square slowly fills with greying Spanish men in flat caps and slippers, sitting on benches, chatting amongst themselves. No doubt the pilgrims are a common topic, although there is the impression that the conversations are the same as yesterdays and the day before. Perhaps a long standing arguement, even.
Daytime fashion for middle aged and older men demands removal of the shirt (preferably revealing a near-pregnant belly) and walking in the midday sun. Hats during the day are rare. Always friendly, but never attractive.
The best was today: we were flaked out in a ditch by the side of a road, again suffering from foot soreness and were passed by a friendly old man dressed only in sandals and baggy velour shorts. Unfortunately, he had made the terrible fashion error of tucking them up high enough to show his groin crease, creating a puffy nappy look. The laugh kept us going and miraculously healed our sore feet.

I've only just caught up with your blogger. It all sounds great, with interesting & lovely scenery, good weather & interesting characters which of course you are 2 of the best! I hope you get some great nights of sleep & have some great food as well. Caught up with Dad & Martin & Robyn today & Dad talked alot about your blog. He loves it & feels like he's doing the journey too. It's been raining most of this last week here so you are blessed to have fine weather. God Bless you both. Alexa

In all the Mediterranean contries old men meet for company and chat in the evenings in the square or at the town gate. I wish we had the same sociable custom here and it is a role that some village pubs play in England. Some old Yugoslavs meet on the seats in the Warriewood shopping centre
